An Innkeeper’s Life in the Rockies

Seasons

Happy day June is hanging basket season in Estes!

Flowers are pretty safe from frost and hungry elk in early June. Each year I fight back the urge to hang the baskets in May. The consequences of doing so are harsh. The mountain rain showers will leave holes and tattered petals, or worse–a late night frost. Which means sudden death…ugg. Petunias thrive on the southern exposure and view of Longs Peak. The aromatic scent greets you as you walk into the house.

I water them everyday pouring water until the water starts to drip out the bottom.

Baby raccoon season!

This little one watched me plant flowers and Maggie the resident border collie watched him right back.

Planting Season

We get a late Spring in the Rocky Mountains. Generally in the last weeks of May. This means planting season is short. We get lots of frost thawing rain for a week or two followed by temperatures in the high 70s. This bench is holding sage in an old crate.

I took this photo in late May shortly after planting. Because the season is short I like to plant full grown plants as my starters. I replanted the sage in the ground at the end of the summer. The sage hibernate over the winter and should (cross my fingers) start to re-grow again in late June.
